As we gather around our tables for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, things may look a bit different. We remember that over the past months there has been a significant loss of life due to the pandemic and many have suffered physically, emotionally, and economically. Others may not be able to travel this holiday season due to lockdowns and quarantines. Amidst the suffering and challenges, though, we are all called upon to look inside our heart, mind and soul and express gratitude to Almighty God. No matter how difficult life may be, as Catholics we can always look to the gift of our faith to find comfort, peace and hope. The Lord is with us at all times and in all situations. As you celebrate the holidays may you have the grace to thank the Almighty for the precious gift of life and for being a part of our Catholic family of faith.

God needs us, His sons and daughters, to be witnesses of faith and hope. At our Baptism we were given a candle, representing the flame of faith. The manner in which we learn, understand, and share this faith is all part of our witness and our ability to be the light of Christ in the world. At this particular time – where there seems to be much darkness and uncertainty – our light needs to shine brighter than ever. I pray that we as a diocesan family may never be afraid or ashamed to be witnesses of faith. Our world needs our lights to shine, for where light and darkness meet, the unwavering light of Christ always overcomes.

Each edition of our diocesan newspaper, the Southern Cross, should help you in your personal journey to be a light and witness of our Catholic faith. Recently I heard from some of our readers commenting on the cover story of the November 12th edition regarding the recent elections. I appreciate your reaching out and I understand your concerns. I realize the need for greater involvement in determining the content of this publication so that you are inspired to learn and understand more about the Truths of our faith, to inspire goodness and charity, and to be the witnesses that God needs and has called us to be. Since my arrival in the diocese I have been observing different communications resources at my disposal which assist me in my mission as Bishop of Savannah. Included in my plans prior to the previous issue was and still is the updating and revamping of this publication, the Southern Cross. Many have expressed their desire for us to include more locally generated stories and information concerning happenings in our Diocese as opposed to carrying syndicated news found in other media. Please know that your feedback is and will be important as we look to the future.

As publisher of the Southern Cross, I commit to providing you with a publication that helps us build up the Body of Christ in the diocese and beyond. I pray that we all may have the courage to be witnesses of our Catholic faith and never be afraid to be light amidst darkness. Thank you for your continued prayers for me that I can be the Shepherd that you need and deserve. Be assured of my prayers for you, your loved ones and your intentions.

e Gracias y Navidad serán un poco diferentes a lo que estábamos acostumbrados. Al sentarnos a la mesa, tendremos en mente que en los últimos meses ha habido una pérdida importante de vidas debido a la pandemia y que muchos han sufrido física, emocional y económicamente. Es posible que algunos no puedan viajar en esta temporada de vacaciones debido a cierres y cuarentenas. Sin embargo, en medio del sufrimiento y los desafíos, todos estamos llamados hacer una introspección y expresar gratitud a Dios Todopoderoso. No importa lo difícil que pueda ser la vida, como católicos siempre podemos encontrar consuelo, paz y esperanza en el don de nuestra fe. El Señor está con nosotros en todo momento y en todas las situaciones. Durante estas fiestas, que Dios todopoderoso nos de la gracia de ser agradecidos por el precioso regalo de la vida y por ser parte de la gran familia católica.

Dios necesita que todos nosotros, sus hijos e hijas, seamos un testimonio vivo de fe y esperanza. En nuestro bautismo recibimos una vela, que representa la luz de la fe. La forma en que aprendemos, entendemos y compartimos esta fe es parte de nuestro testimonio y capacidad de ser luz de Cristo en el mundo. En este tiempo —donde pareciera que hay mucha oscuridad e incertidumbre— nuestra luz debe brillar más que nunca. Yo rezo para que nosotros, como familia diocesana, nunca tengamos miedo o nos sintamos avergonzados de ser testimonio vivo de nuestra fe. Nuestro mundo necesita que nuestra luz brille, porque cuando la luz y la oscuridad se enfrentan, la luz inquebrantable de Cristo siempre vence.

Cada edición de nuestro periódico diocesano, Southern Cross, debe ayudarles en su camino personal para que sean luz y testimonio de nuestra fe católica. Recientemente escuché comentarios de algunos lectores en relación a la portada del 12 de noviembre que hablaba sobre las elecciones. Agradezco su interés y entiendo su preocupación. A partir de esto, he realizado que yo necesito participar más cercanamente en el proceso de determinar el contenido de esta publicación. Mi deseo es que al leerla se sientan inspirados a aprender más sobre las verdades de nuestra fe, a mostrar bondad, caridad y a convertirse en lo que Dios nos ha llamado a ser. Desde mi llegada a Savannah, he estado analizando los diferentes recursos de comunicación que existen en esta diócesis para ayudarme, como obispo, a cumplir mi misión. Aun antes de la publicación de la edición anterior ya estaba en mis planes —y sigue estando— la necesidad de rediseñar y modernizar el periódico Southern Cross. Muchos han expresado su deseo de que se incluyan más historias e información de los acontecimientos de nuestra diócesis en lugar de noticias que se pueden encontrar en otros medios. Quiero que sepan que sus comentarios son y serán siempre importantes.

Como editor del periódico Southern Cross, me comprometo a ofrecerles una publicación que nos ayude a construir el Reino de Dios en nuestra diócesis y más allá de ella. Rezo para que todos tengamos el valor de ser siempre testimonio de nuestra fe y nunca tengamos miedo de ser luz en medio de la oscuridad. Les agradezco que recen por mí para que yo pueda ser el obispo que ustedes necesitan y merecen. Tengan la seguridad de que yo estaré orando por ustedes y por sus seres queridos. Encontrémonos cada día en nuestras oraciones y ¡alegrémonos siempre en el Señor!
