Bishop Stephen D. Parkes reflects on SCOTUS decision

I am grateful today for the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States giving each state the ability to legislate the availability of abortion services. As Catholics, we honor and celebrate that every human person is made in the image and likeness of God. Our Church and our Pro-Life Ministries are committed to helping pregnant women, assisting and walking with them in their time of need. We can help to provide resources to bring hope and comfort.

For those who have experienced the pain of abortion, I realize that today’s news may trigger memories and feelings due to past decisions. Please know that the Church is here to accompany women and men in a journey toward healing.

As we have had one law which has governed our land for almost 50 years, each of our 50 states will now have the ability to determine the law for their residents. We must continue to be dedicated to building a Culture of Life in all areas of our country, ensuring that the dignity of every human person is respected from conception until natural death.

Finally, I ask that we remember that here in these United States, we are ‘one nation under God’. As today’s news may spark unrest, I pray that we can be united in peace as a people, recognizing not our differences but our common dignity given to us by our Creator.
