Reflections from School Leaders

Mary Anne Hogan, President, St. Vincent’s Academy, Savannah

The start of every new school year brings such great excitement that we can lead more young women to Christ!

Jacob Horne, Principal, Benedictine Military School, Savannah

A Catholic education is much deeper than academic or athletic achievement. At its core, it focuses on formation rather than information. While an education changes what a student learns, a Catholic education changes who a student becomes. We are proud of the formation of our young men intellectually, morally, spiritually, socially, and athletically, but understand our ultimate goal is shepherding them toward union with God.

Cheri Carter, Principal, St. John the Evangelist Catholic School, Valdosta

Catholic education is the formation of the whole child – spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and morally. It is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church, providing students with an environment where faith and learning are seamlessly integrated. Every subject is viewed through the lens of our Catholic faith, encouraging students to recognize God’s presence in all areas of learning and life. I want each child to feel valued, supported, and inspired to use their unique gifts in service to others. My goal is to strengthen the partnership between home, school, and parish. Parents are the primary educators of their children, and together we share the responsibility of nurturing both faith and learning.

Heather Dalelio, Lower School Principal, St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School, Columbus

At St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School, we strive to follow our mission every day...to form knowledgeable, faithful, and responsible citizens who compassionately serve others. We place Jesus Christ at the center of everything we do, fostering academic excellence while helping students grow in faith, honesty, loyalty, and respect. My hope is that every student grows in faith, knowledge, and confidence while feeling valued and challenged every single day. I also hope to strengthen our partnership with families as we work together to help every child thrive.

Sr. Joan Felicia O’Reilly, IHM, Principal, St. James Catholic School, Savannah

Catholic education is how schools/educators/parishes support parents in teaching the faith to children. Parents are the primary educators of the faith; we are here to help parents. In my 45 years of experience, I have seen much growth and change. Catholic schools today provide a faith-filled, intentional, safe learning space. Our teachers are committed to the mission of Catholic education and their school; and they work hard to infuse the curriculum with faith formation and a love of the Lord. Although Catholic schools are not always perfect, faculty and staff work hard to make school a place of faith and learning. As we begin this school year, it is my hope that each and every student learns the love of God through everyone they encounter and that they may grow closer to the Lord through prayer, knowledge, and service.

Maureen Lewis, Principal, Aquinas High School, Augusta

Catholic schools are unique in how we measure success. We are committed to forming wise, morally-grounded students who know the difference between good and evil and who choose the good. We are not simply preparing students for college or work; we are preparing them to discover their God-given vocation, pursue holiness, and eventually become saints in heaven.
